Dear Alejandrina,

Here I am, in our new room. It’s in a family house where they have lodgers. Our room is very nice and comfortable and, most importantly, much cheaper than the hotel.
We couldn’t find a flat so we decided to look for a “stanza ammobiliata”, as they call them here. The landlady is a very nice woman and we feel at home.
If we decide to stay a few months longer, we will look for a little flat without pressure, but for now the important thing is not to waste so much money in hotel bills. Oscar is working very well. He hasn’t stopped since we arrived, luckily because not everyone can start work as soon as they arrive. He is very satisfied and likes to work with his mates, so everything is going well. I go nearly every day to the studio with him, we are together and sometimes I help him. Other times I go to the Spitale’s house to do our washing and ironing, then Oscar comes later and we have dinner all together. We can eat better by sharing the expense and the cooking, and it is cheaper.

Something very important: for your next letter, don’t forget to address the envelope to Spitale first, otherwise the letter will be mislaid because the postman doesn’t know us and there is no janitor in the building. Please write: Mr. Federico Spitale, for Oscar Grillo. Your last letter arrived by chance and the postman complained because he has to go around the whole building looking for a Grillo and nobody knows the name. Agreed? Thank you!

We are having lovely weather over here, they say that other years at this time it has rained constantly and it has been very cold. Luckily this year we are having beautiful days and although it is cold it’s tolerable because it is sunny. It seems as if we have brought the good weather. That’s how generous we Argentineans are.

Well, I must say good bye, Alejandrina, give many kisses to Teresa from me, even if she doesn’t write, and the same to all the rest of the family, especially granny.

Querida Alejandrina:

Aquí estoy, en nuestra nueva habitación. Es en una casa de familia donde alquilamos una pieza muy bonita y cómoda, y sobre todo mucho más barata que el hotel. Como no encontrábamos departamento, decidimos buscar una “stanza ammobiliata”, como se llaman aquí. La señora de la casa es muy amable y estamos muy bien.

Para diciembre, con más tranquilidad, y si decidimos quedarnos unos meses más, buscaremos un apartamentito. Por ahora lo importante es no gastar tanto en hotel. Oscar está trabajando mucho, desde que llegamos que no para de trabajar, lo cual es una suerte pues no todos pueden llegar y ponerse a trabajar así. Está muy contento, además se encuentra muy bien con sus compañeros, o sea que todo va fenómeno.
Casi todos los días voy con él al estudio y estamos juntos, a veces lo ayudo. Otros días voy a lo de los Spitale a lavar la ropa y plancharla, y luego viene Oscar y comemos todos juntos. Cocinando a medias se come mejor y es más barato.

Algo muy importante: en la próxima carta, no deje de poner en el sobre antes que nada el nombre de Spitale, si no la carta no llega pues a nosotros el cartero no nos conoce y en la casa no hay portero. O sea, tiene que poner así: Sr. Federico Spitale, a/o Oscar Grillo. Es muy importante, por favor, pues si no el cartero devuelve las cartas. La última llegó de casualidad y el cartero protestó porque tiene que recorrer todo el edificio buscando a un Grillo y nadie lo conoce. De acuerdo? Gracias!

Aquí está haciendo un tiempo buenísimo a pesar de que otros años a esta altura llueve todos los días y hace un frío barbaro. Este año, por suerte, tenemos unos días hermosos y aunque hace frío no es para tanto porque hay sol. Será que nosotros hemos traído el buen tiempo? Los argentinos somos así.
