La Sagrada Familia

28th February 1970, Barcelona Dear Mrs. Alejandrina, dear Teresa:

Two letters from each of you arrived today. It’s been some time since you got a letter from us simply because we haven’t written. We have been very busy in the last two weeks with visits from compatriot friends. There is a couple living with us (until today), they are very nice kids, I knew them from Buenos Aires.

1) Very very good Teresa’s decision, excellent. We wish you the best of successes. It would be so good if you wrote always letters like this one, it’s very nice and we laughed a lot with the stories about Tony.


2) The letters of Mrs. Alejandrina make us laugh deliriously. We imagine you writing while standing up or running, hurrying between the boiling pot and the embroidery you are doing at the same time. Never stop being so “crazy” and natural. Yours are the most authentic letters we get (only don’t go too mad with the hand writing or we’ll need an Egyptologist to decipher them).

3) We want to ask Alicia to forgive that we are not writing directly to her. The problem is we do not have her address. In any case, these letters are also for her, Carlos and Tony.

7) Tony would go mad if he ever goes to Barcelona’s zoo. There are gorillas and one of them is white with blue eyes. It is the only known albino gorilla in the world. There are also performing dolphins, beautiful fish from all over the world and lots of rare animals. The zoo has been designed with some fantasy and it seems that the “creatures” are roaming free.

8) Yesterday we went to “La Sagrada Familia”, an incredible, super modern church. Although it was started in 1890 it hasn’t been finished yet and perhaps many years will pass before it is completed. It is wonderful, very moving, we climbed the tallest tower (180 m) and saw the whole of Barcelona from there. Coming down was terrible and we were very frightened because the stairs are extremely narrow and twisting inside the tower. Horizontal slits on the outer wall, like slides, invite you to jump, slopping down onto the street. Patricia was hysterical and her legs were shaking. She climbed down on her arse, sitting on the steps. It was an unforgettable experience.

9) We are getting tired of Catalonia, soon we will go to Italy. I will let you know when. For now, carry on writing here; there is plenty of time. After travelling around Europe we are planning to go around all Spain.

Querida Doña Alejandrina, querida Teresa:

Han llegado dos cartas de cada una. Hace mucho que ustedes no reciben cartas nuestras por el simple hecho de que no las hemos escrito, fueron dos semanas que estuvimos bastante ocupados con la visita de varios amigos criollos. Una pareja amiga está (hasta hoy) viviendo con nosotros. Muy buenos chicos, yo ya los conocía de Buenos Aires.

1) Muy, muy bien la decisión de Teresa, genial. Te deseamos el mayor de los éxitos. Además es de desear que escribas siempre cartas así, que son muy lindas y nos hacen reír mucho con las historias de Tony.

2) Las cartas de Mrs. Alejandrina llegan a hacernos delirar de risa. Nos imaginamos que las escribís parada, corriendo apurada, entre un hervor del puchero y atendiendo al bordado que tendrás entre las manos. Por favor no dejes de ser así de “loca” y natural. Son las cartas más auténticas que recibimos (lo único que pedimos es que no te “revires” tanto con la letra que tenemos que descifrarlas con un “egiptólogo”.

3) A Alicia le pedimos perdón por no escribirle en forma directa. El único problema es que no tenemos su dirección. Igual estas cartas son también para ella, Carlos y Tony.

4) Idem para abuelita y parientes cercanos.

5) No sean turros y escriban.

6) Don José, ¿siempre tan buen mozo?

7) Si Tony llega a venir al Zoológico de Barcelona, se vuelve loco. Hay gorilas y uno de ellos es blanco y tiene ojos azules, es el único ejemplar que se conoce en el mundo. Además hay delfines que hacen pruebas, pescados hermosos de todo el mundo y animales rarísimos en cantidades industriales. El zoo está construído con mucha fantasía y da la sensación de que los “bichos” anduviesen sueltos.

8) Ayer fuimos a “La Sagrada Familia”, iglesia genial y supermoderna, aunque la construyeron en 1890 aún no la terminaron y quizás falten muchos años para que la finalicen. Es genial, hermosa, sobrecogedora. Subimos a la torre más alta (180 m); cuando vimos toda Barcelona nos queríamos morir, bajar fue una tortura china. Teníamos un miedo bárbaro, Patricia estaba histérica y le temblaban las piernas. Bajaba de culo, sentada en los escaloncitos (son pasadizos muy estrechos con agujeros muy grandes que dan la sensación de que te podés ir de cabeza al piso) fue inolvidable.

9) Como ya nos estamos pudriendo de Cataluña, nos vamos pronto a Italia. Ya les voy a decir la fecha justa. Por ahora escriban que todavía falta y las cartas han de llegar. La recorrida a España toda la vamos a hacer a la vuelta de la recorrida por toda Europa. Es de desear que ustedes lo estén pasando bien y no tengan problemas.

Llamar a García, en Producciones García Ferré (está en la guía), preguntar por Roberto García y dar y pedir noticias. Ya que a l le escribo seguro como a ustedes, guachitas...

A abuelita, tía Delia, etc. les agradezco las cartas y les pido que escriban (ya saben que esta carta es también para ellas y ellos).
Espero que el amiguito de Teresa sea buen mozo y tenga muchísima guita, ¿No? ¿Cómo se llama? ¿Lo conozco? Salúdenlo afectuosamente de nuestra parte.
